Who is Legal & General?

What life insurance products do
Legal & General offer?

Legal & General life insurance offers a wide range of life insurance services, some of which are listed below:

Level Term Life Insurance

You pay a fixed amount each month, and your cover amount stays the same for the whole policy term. If you pass away during this time, your loved ones receive an agreed cash lump sum. This can help with expenses like:

  • Mortgage/rent
  • Living costs and bills
  • Funeral costs
Decreasing Term Life Insurance

Decreasing life insurance is for people with a repayment mortgage, which is why itโ€™s often called mortgage cover. The cover amount goes down over time, roughly matching your mortgage balance, but your monthly payments stay the same. If you die during the policy term, your family receives a cash lump sum to help pay off the mortgage or other similar debts. Just keep in mind, if your mortgage rate goes up and outpaces your policyโ€™s rate, your cover might not fully match your outstanding mortgage, so itโ€™s a good idea to check that your cover amount and term are right for your needs.

Over 50s Life Insurance

Over 50s life insurance is for people aged 50 and above, with guaranteed acceptanceโ€”no medical questions or exams needed. This policy is a type of whole of life cover, which means youโ€™re covered for the rest of your life and your loved ones are guaranteed a payout whenever you pass away (sometimes called โ€œlife assuranceโ€). Thereโ€™s usually a waiting period, also known as a moratorium period (often 1 to 2 years), before full cover takes effect. The payout can help with things like funeral costs or other expenses.

Critical Illness Cover

Legal &ย General Criticalย illness is an add-on to either life insurance or decreasing life insurance. It covers you should you become critically ill (Critical Illness Glossary) during the policy term and, the illnesses covered will vary by insurer. The pay-out can be used to cover medical treatment expenses, bills, childcare and anything else you may need.ย ย ย

As well as the many types of life insurance mentioned above, Legal & General also offer other products in the form of:

  • Stock and Shares ISA
  • Pension and retirement plans
  • Business protection

Increasing Term Life Insurance

Increasing life insurance helps your cover keep up with rising living costs. The cover amount increases each year, to tackle the effects of inflation, so your payout and premiums keep pace with the cost of living. This way, the value of your policy stays in step with price rises, so your loved ones are better protected against the effects of inflation. If you prefer, you can usually switch to level cover at any time.

Decreasing Term Life Insurance

Decreasing life insurance is for people with a repayment mortgage, which is why itโ€™s often called mortgage cover. The cover amount goes down over time, roughly matching your mortgage balance, but your monthly payments stay the same. Critical Illness Cover

Critical illness is both a standalone policy and can be taken out alongside life insurance. It covers you should you become critically ill (Critical Illness Glossary) during the policy term and, the illnesses covered will vary by insurer. The pay-out can be used to cover medical treatment expenses, bills, childcare and anything else you may need. Aviva’s Critical illness cover also covers your children should they become critically ill.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is taken out in advance of having to pay for private healthcare for any short-term illnesses and ailments that might arise. In this scenario, you choose the healthcare benefits you need and pay a monthly premium. However, life insurance is often taken out alongside this.

Benefits of insuring with Legal & General

Legal & General offer a wide range of benefits alongside their policies. Many are available to all policy holders, whilst some are only available to those with specified cover:

Umbrella benefits

Included as standard are two benefits, intended to focus on physical and mental health. Wellbeing support is provided by RedArc nurses, providing personal nurses to all of those with a policy. Rehabilitation support service is also available, but only for those with an income protection policy and rental income protection. The remaining optional benefit that policy holders can choose is private diagnostics, which you can have for an additional fee, you can learn more about this here.

Accident hospitalisation benefit

Accident hospitalisation benefit is an addition to critical illness protection, at no extra cost.
If you’re admitted to hospital with physical injuries as a result of a recent accident, for a minimum of 28 consecutive days, you can claim and receive ยฃ5,000 from Legal & General as that extra cushion of support you might need (though this benefit isnโ€™t payable if a valid critical illness cover claim has already been made).

Guaranteed insurability option

A benefit of Legal & General, which applies to life insurance, decreasing life insurance and critical illness cover, is the ability to alter your policy. This is often referred to as a Guaranteed Insurability Option (or GIO) and is a standard of most insurers, allowing you to increase your policy without being reassessed (terms and conditions apply).

Terminal illness cover

Terminal illness cover is automatically included in all life cover plans, at no additional cost. Should you find yourself with the unfortunate news that you have less than 12 months left to live due to being diagnosed with a terminal illness, then Legal & General will pay out the full amount of your life insurance cover to you and your loved ones. eligibility criteria applies to this benefit.

Accidental death benefit

The accidental death benefit entitles you to cover, even whilst your life insurance application is being processed. You’d be paid out the amount of cover you’d applied for within your policy, or ยฃ300,000 (whichever is lower), without the need for any medical underwriting, if you died due to an accident. It begins the second you submit your completed application form and lasts for up to 90 days, or however long it takes for your application to be accepted, declined, postponed or if you withdraw your application, whichever is earliest.

Free life cover

Free life cover is available at no extra cost to customers with life insurance and decreasing life insurance policies – if they are moving home. If you were to pass away between the exchange of contracts and completion of your property purchase, your loved ones will get either the sum assured, or ยฃ300,000, whichever is lowest. This is payable up to a maximum of 90 days. Eligibility criteria applies to this benefit.

Funeral payment pledge

Up to ยฃ10,000 of advanced payment can be paid out early to families of life insurance policy holders, depending on each individual valid claim and circumstances, to ease them of the financial burden that comes with planning a funeral, something which often cannot be delayed. This payment is made directly to the funeral director.

Children’s critical illness cover

With your own critical illness policy, your children are automatically covered too. Should the very worst thing happen, and your child passes away L&G will pay a funeral contribution. This benefit is included as standard.
